I've never been to New York, but one thing I always had wanted to do if I managed to make it there was to climb Lady Liberty. Hopefully she'll be opened to the huddled masses again in the future. Incidentally, while that whole "freedom fries" bollocks was going on, and the image of the statue of Liberty was plastered all over along with the flag, not many people paused to remember that she was given to us by our French allies. One of the things that really bothered me about the american people's reaction to this whole thing was the "let's rip on France" stuff. If not for France, we'd still be an English colony. Your post today reminded me of that odd little duality. Nice to see you posting again! You're putting me to shame. ;)

i was at the statue last november. very impressive. the park ranger said that wear and tear and it's cost on the bronze structure of the statue was a long term concern. there for, if nobody climbs it, no wear and tear, hence no budget issue. it has nothing to do with terrorism. it is a money thing.
